Laboratory skills: rock crushing, magnetic mineral separation, heavy liquid mineral separation, sediment core splitting, visual down-core characterisation of sediment cores, sediment grain-size analyses, sediment magnetic susceptibility analyses, counting and picking foraminifera for stable isotope analyses, diatom settling and assemblage reconstructions, wet leaching of sediments (ferromanganese coatings, opal and calcium carbonate removal), visual microscopy and characterisation of mineral grains and clasts in sand, acid digestion and flux fusion digestion of rocks and sediments in clean labs, iron precipitation, ion chromatographic separation of rare earth elements and strontium in sediments, rocks and ores in clean labs
Analytical skills: solid sample preparation and analysis of strontium isotopes from sediments, rocks and ores by TIMS (Triton); analysis of neodymium isotopes from sediments, rocks and ores by MC-ICP-MS (Nu Plasma); analyses of major and minor and oxides elemental concentrations in marine sediments using ICP-AES and ICP-MS; some limited experience of analyses of argon isotopes from mineral grains by gas mass spectrometry
